This is our 3rd installment of telling the Sunshine Coast and others about things we’ve tasted from local shops and restaurants that we think people need to try.
Buono Osteria’s “Beef Carpaccio”
On the menu since the restaurant first opened, Buono’s Beef Carpaccio is textbook for this dish. It’s the sort of thing when I see it on a menu, I immediately want to order. With Mike Buono’s version, he uses beef tenderloin, quick seared on the outside and then sliced a fraction thicker than you can see through. With truffle aioli, caper berries (king size), arugula and shavings of Pecorino Romano, “melts in the mouth” would be a very apt description. It’s been in Mike’s repertoire for years and needs never change. Thumbs up!
Crazy Red’s Breads Cheesy “Pull Apart” Bread
This is bread is “more-ish”. More and more and more. Have you ever had one of those food items that’s hard to stop eating? One of those where your mother would say “Stop eating that or you’ll spoil your dinner”. Crazy Red’s best seller is one of those things. Cam & Darci Paterson consider this their signature item of all the goods on their chalkboard. Such is the popularity that you need to order 24hrs in advance to be sure you get it. Doughy and cheesy, the fillings change depending on what they can get at the time. But jalapenos and/or green onions would be the two most likely. Stick your hand in the bag, tear off a piece and stuff it in your mouth. Repeat. Thumbs up.
Fisherman’s Market Prawn & Scallop Cakes
The Fisherman’s Market Gibsons has a few creations they do along this line. Salmon/ Halibut burgers, Crab Cakes and others. But this is their finest in CCC’s opinion. Chopped prawns, scallops, rainbow peppers and cilantro, these cakes are the freshest, cleanest tasting cakes we’ve tried. Lot’s of meatiness (meat of the sea) and need very little adornment beyond maybe lemon. Certainly you can dress them up with oils, mayo combos or other, but really, they’re delicious on their own. Coast culinary Collective is making the call that this is their signature item with the hopes they’re on board with that. Likely the case though as it’s their very own creation and unique to this location. Best to call ahead though as they’re only able to make them when all the ingredients are on hand. Thumbs Up.
