Cheval Quancard’s “Les Vendanges de Lise” 2018 is a wine you don’t come across often. That’s to say it’s Bordeaux Blanc. Most people think Rouge when the region of Bordeaux is brought up. Best known for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and made famous by Chateaux such as Margaux and Mouton Rothschild, France’s most famous wine region lies along the Atlantic in the southwest of the country. The Vendanges de Lise is produced in the sub-appellation of Entre Deux Mers where it sits between the rivers of Garonne and Dordogne. It’s name references it as being between “the two tides of those rivers”.
The proprietary winery of Cheval Quancard has been making wines since 1844 under the direction of the Quancard family. They’re responsible for a number of chateaux in the region and are credited with the production of numerous wines of good value. Not something Bordeaux is necessarily recognized for.
The grapes Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Muscadelle are the allowed varietals of the region and the Vendanges utilizes all three. 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 20 % Semillon and 10% Muscadelle.
Flavours of apricots and exotic fruits dominate the palate with a creamy texture in the mouth.
If you’re looking for dishes to pair it with, we’d suggest scallops and/or sablefish for their richer flavour and texture.
Due to it’s blend of grapes, this may very well be unlike anything you’ve tasted in a white wine before and is extremely worthy of giving a try. I’ll finish by saying that 2018 was an exceptional vintage in the region so you’ll be trying a great example of these wines.
